Fairfax County's historical attractions include Woodlawn Plantation

The Wall Street Journal has called Herndon, Virginia, one of the top three "boom towns" in the United States, they were referring to its remarkable growth during the past decade. And although the statistics are impressive, the Town of Herndon is proudest of the story that numbers alone could never convey.
Herndon, the third largest town in Virginia, is rich in character and tradition. More than 100 years of attentive local planning has fostered an environment that allowed for extraordinary growth without sacrificing a strong sense of community. Today's healthy balance of commercial, residential, and recreational components has made Herndon one of the largest mixed-use developments in Northern Virginia.

As an incorporated town within Fairfax County, Herndon is governed by an elected Mayor and a six-member Town Council who make appointments to planning, zoning, and architectural review boards; adopt Town policy and ordinances; establish tax rates; and approve the Town budget and capitol improvement program. A Town manager oversees the budget, the Town departments, personnel, daily operations and the municipal golf course.
